This weekend, the hottest ticket in New York is a seven-hour-plus movie about Adolf Hitler. Showing just once at Film at Lincoln Center, Hans-Jürgen Syberberg’s rarely screened epic, “Hitler, a Film From Germany,” is, according to the programmers, sold out despite its behemoth running time (which includes a few breaks). “There is Syberberg’s film — and then there are the other films one admires,” she wrote. Divided in four parts, the film is a Wagnerian opera on acid, composed of theatrical sketches inspired by the German dictator’s life. Syberberg wasn’t without a sense of humor, either: In one scene, steam pours out of a sculpture of a rear end.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Los Angeles Opera has scrapped plans for the world premiere of Mason Bates' “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay” this fall because of finances. The work will instead open with a student cast at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music. Cremo sent an email last month to Abra K. Bush, dean of the Jacobs School, suggesting the shift. Bates, 47, won a Grammy Award in 2019 for “The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs,” which premiered at the Santa Fe Opera in 2017 and was coproduced with the Jacobs School. “It's a story about Jewish immigrants changing American culture and certainly that resonates in LA,” Bates said.

Netflix co-founder and executive chairman Reed Hastings has gifted two million shares of his holdings in the streaming giant, according to a regulatory filing, with a current value of more than $1.1 billion. "We don't know what it could be, whether it's a charity or multiple charities," VerityData Vice President Ben Silverman told CNBC. Hastings retains just under three million Netflix shares with a value of around $1.7 billion. Though Hastings remains the executive chairman of Netflix, the company has no obligation to disclose the reason behind the gift or the beneficiary. Netflix shares are up nearly 23% year to date but are still around 16% below their 2021 high.

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Philharmonic will play excerpts of music from the Academy Award-nominated “Maestro,” on the life of former music director Leonard Bernstein, on Feb. 14. Bradley Cooper, the movie's star and director, will participate in a post-performance conversation at Lincoln Center's David Geffen Hall. Metropolitan Opera music director Yannick Nézet-Séguin, who coached Cooper for the movie and led music for the soundtrack, will conduct the performance in his New York Philharmonic debut and join the conversation, the orchestra said Wednesday. The program will include excerpts from "West Side Story,” “Candide," “On the Town,” “Trouble in Tahiti,” “A Quiet Place," “Chichester Psalms” and Bernstein's Symphony No. 3 “Kaddish.”“Maestro” was nominated for seven Oscars, including for best picture and best actor, for Cooper.
